TEK Student Survey 2025: Inclusion in Guild Culture, Strengths and Gaps

The survey paints an encouraging picture of student guild culture in Finnish universities awarding degrees in technology/engineering. Here are the key findings.

According to TEK Student Survey 2025 (n=3,715), more than 80% of respondents report feeling accepted, able to be themselves, and that the atmosphere is good. Guilds and degree associations are also widely seen as open in practice, offering diverse events and opportunities to take part in organising.

At the same time, inclusion is uneven across groups. English-speaking students stand out with markedly lower perceptions of influence and participation: 36% report they have never taken part in guild activities (vs. 22% overall), and only 13% have held a board or official role (vs. 24% overall). Differences by gender are smaller in belonging, though non-binary respondents report feeling slightly less able to be themselves than men.

Experiences of inappropriate conduct, nonetheless, show clear gender gaps. 3% of men report experiencing inappropriate behaviour, compared with 10% of women and 20% of non-binary respondents. A positive finding was that most students (around 90%) know who to contact if harassment occurs, but awareness is weaker among English speakers (20% do not know).

Encouragingly, respondents report that guilds have implemented multiple equity practices, including harassment contact persons (91%), safer space principles (84%), and reporting processes (74%).
