    • What happens? Each day, a program is designed that allows the Freshers to get to know each other, important university matters, as well as the student culture of Lappeenranta. Fresher Weeks include for example the making of Fresher caps from old student caps, Fresher promotion, Fresher orienteering, the Fresher Olympics, and a cocktail party in the centre of Lappeenranta.
    • Who organises? LTKY, LUT, guilds and other student associations.
    • What is best? Getting to know new faces and new things. For older students and organisers, it’s a chance to tell new Freshers about your own experiences and to see friends after a long summer.

  3. PowiCup
    • When? The start of February
    • Who for? The event is aimed at all students in Finland, with Teekkari teams from other cities often arriving to take part. In addition, representatives of companies in the surrounding area take part in their own series.
    • What happens? Powi Cup is a Kyykkä tournament (see the Teekkari ABC). The parking lots next to the university are turned into Kyykkä fields, with teams competing on them during the day. A chance to warm up after a long cold day is provided in the follow-up afterparty.
    • What is best? To enjoy the crisp winter air with overalls on, and to cheer the best teams to victory.

Teekkari Culture in Lappeenranta

In Lappeenranta there are nine Teekkari guilds, as well as an association of business students, and five student associations within the LAB University of Applied Science. The result of this is a strong and varied overall student body in Lappeenranta. Each guild or association has their own overalls in their own colour. As well as overall badges, other traditional additions to the overalls exist, such as the sewing of the guild Host or Hostess emblem onto the collar, or the Chairperson’s ribbon onto the overalls themselves.

At Sitsit parties and annual balls, the song book of the student union Punamusta (“Red Black”) is regularly used, which features, amongst others, songs from South Karelia. Sitsit parties always begin with “Krokotiili Genan syntymäpäivälaululla” (“Crocodile Gene’s Birthday”), and end with the “Ikuisen Teekarin Laulu” (“Song of the Eternal Teekkari”) and “Karjalaisten laulu”  ("The Song of the Karelians").

Wappu Traditions

Wappu time in Lappeenranta is the longest in Finland, lasting for around a month. During Wappu time, a variety of traditional events and activities across Lappeenranta are performed. These include the guilds of Lappeenranta painting their logos on Punkkerimäki near the university, appro tours (crawls) through the city centre bars, driving around the city centre in cars during the KRuisinKi event, wearing togas, and capping the Kurkipatsas (“Cranes Statue”) on Wappu Eve. Throughout Wappu, the Freshers compete in a variety of Fresher tasks.

On Wappu Eve, Freshers receive their Teekkari Baptism, via a slide from the harbour into Lake Saimaa. Freshers who undergo this baptism, and have otherwise received enough points, are allowed to put on their new Teekkari caps at the Wappu Eve party, after the Teekkari Hymn has been sung. The Wappu Brunch is held on Wappu Day at the old fortress in the centre of Lappeenranta. In addition, for the whole duration of Wappu, outdoor fireplaces near the university are fed with wood and other flammable materials, in order to keep Teekkari students warm, and to provide a cosy outdoor environment for socialising.

On Wappu Day, the Wappu Flag bearing a symbol of a Teekkari Cap is hoisted on the flagpole of the Ylioppilastalo, and the Declaration of Wappu proclamation is read.

Throughout Wappu, the spirit and hype levels are shared and kept high by student-run Wappu radio Norpparadio, as well as the Wappu magazine Hässi.

Teekkari Cap and Other Symbols

The Lappeenranta Teekkari Cap has seven corners, with a cockade in the shape of the letter Aleph. The lining is red and black. The LTKY ribbon (kuntanauha) is also red and black, and may be worn by members of the Student Union at academic ceremonies and when representing LTKY. The Board and Executive Director of LTKY have their own ribbon, which is double the size of the regular ribbon, but with the same colour pattern. This may also be used by LTKY’s Head Secretary, as well as those who are awarded a Badge of Merit (ansiomerkki) by LTKY.
