Teekkari Culture in Tampere
Higher education in technology in Tampere, and hence the first Teekkari students there, began in 1965. In 1972, an independent university for their studies separated, and moved to the Hervanta campus, in which technology students in Tampere still reside to this day, despite the universities merging back together in 2019.
In Tampere, Teekkari culture is implemented and run by the Teekkari Union of Tampere. Examples of the culture include the Wappu magazine Tamppi, official songbook Rasputin, musical Speksi NääsPeksi, Mörrimöykky sauna, and the World Championships of Academic Kyykkä. Wappu Traditions
Wappu in Tampere begins at around mid-April with the announcement and publication of the Wappu magazine Tamppi, and with the party Colours, run by Tampereen Jäynäkisa (Tampere’s Jäynä Competition). The Capping of the “Goldilocks” statue, and the Teekkari dipping ceremony (Teekkarikaste), both of which take place on Wappu Day, form the most visible parts of the festivities. However, a range of events hosted by guilds and other student associations also happen during Wappu time.
In the Teekkari dipping, two cranes carrying baskets are used to dip Fuksi who have earned the right to be dipped into the waters of Tammerkoski. The right is earned via the collection of 300 Fuksi points from various activities and events throughout the Fuksi year. During the dipping, a Fuksi dies, and a Teekkari is born.
Throughout Wappu, the student-run Rakkauden Wappuradio keeps spirits high, and acts to share the spirit and news of Wappu to all students.
Teekkari Cap and Other Symbols
The Tampere Teekkari cap is hexagonal, with a "technical red" (teekkarinpunainen) lining.
In Tampere, there are a variety of emblems, ribbons and symbols representing a range of guilds, associations, and activities. Current and former members of TREY can use the student union sash (ylioppilaskuntanauha), which is blue, white and yellow. Read more here.
