Through the training, you will:
- Gain a stronger understanding of Finnish working life and labour market practices
- Learn about your rights and responsibilities as an employee
- Develop confidence in navigating working life in Finland
- Study flexibly alongside work, family and other commitments
- Receive a certificate demonstrating your commitment to continuous learning
The Start to Finnish-online training is fully online and self-paced. All content is available on an online learning platform. You can complete the entire training or focus only on the modules that interest you.
The platform offers opportunities for discussion and peer learning. Optional reflection tasks encourage you to explore topics through your own experiences and share insights with other participants if you wish.
All discussions are moderated, and participant privacy is carefully considered.
The online course is designed for people in working life, regardless of career stage or sector. The training provides general information applicable across different fields. For profession-specific guidance, please contact TEK.
The training is available in English. Please note that this is not a Finnish language course.
Course content
The training consists of five practical learning modules:
- Features of Finnish Society
- When Looking for Work
- When Starting Work
- When Working
- When Work Ends
Each module contains 5–6 chapters covering key aspects of life and work in Finland.
Completing the entire training takes approximately 20–25 hours, but you are free to study only the topics that are most relevant to you.
Certificate of Completion
If you wish to complete the full training and receive a certificate, you need to:
- Read all training content
- Complete the mandatory Your Turn tasks
- Complete the learning reflections at the end of each module
- Submit the course feedback
Instructions for Participating in the Training
You can start the training immediately by clicking “Start the training”. Once you have started, you will receive a Welcome message by email (please remember to check your spam folder as well). The message includes a link that you can use to log in to the training in the future, in addition to accessing it via the training website. You may also save the training page as a bookmark in your browser.
Registration for the training will be available until 31 August 2027. To participate, you only need a suitable device and an internet connection. The training is also accessible on mobile devices.

Start to Finnish® is developed and moderated by Akava, the Confederation of Unions for Professional and Managerial Staff in Finland, in cooperation with its affiliate unions including TEK. Some universities and universities of applied sciences also offer a student version of the training (Start to Finnish® - Start Your Career in Finland).
