App stores, e-commerce marketplaces, and other digital platforms offer wonderful opportunities for Finland-based entrepreneurs to reach customers around the world. But the platform economy also comes with risks, as platform companies can suddenly change their rules in ways that undermine businesses that depend on them.
In this event Vili Lehdonvirta reviews the opportunities and risks of platform economy. Lehdonvirta also gives examples of how small businesses have successfully managed to survive and thrive in the global platform economy, despite the giant platform companies' unexpected actions and changes.
Vili Lehdonvirta
Vili Lehdonvirta is a professor at the Oxford Internet Institute, University of Oxford. He has written the books "Cloud empires: How digital platforms are overtaking the state and how we can regain control” and “Virtual economies: Design and analysis”, both published by MIT Press.
Vili has authored and co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles published in leading journals such as Socio-Economic Review, Sociology, and Journal of Management. His research has been covered by The New York Times, The Guardian, The Economist, Washington Post, Die Zeit, Le Monde, Nikkei, and other popular media around the world.
Before academic career, he worked briefly as a game programmer.
