TEK in brief


The aim of TEK

The Finnish Association of Graduate Engineers TEK is a professional and labour market organisation. On behalf of its members TEK negotiates and concludes collective agreements concerning salaries and conditions of employment in industry and in the service and public sectors. TEK is involved in professional, educational and social matters related to work, employment and the careers of its members at regional, national and international levels. TEK also promotes technology for the benefit of people, the environment and society.
Members

TEK has about 72.000 members. They are graduate engineers or other professionals (41.000) working in the field of technology or engineering students (26.000). The graduate members hold a MSc degree, mostly in Engineering, or a Doctor of Technology degree. The degree may have been awarded by a Finnish or a foreign university. Approximately 1.500 of the members are currently working abroad.

A short history

The Finnish Association of Graduate Engineers TEK (formerly The Engineering Society of Finland STS) was founded in 1896 to promote the interests of Finnish-speaking university graduate engineers, to publish technological literature in the Finnish language and to promote technology as well as technical education and training.
In the early 1970´s the scope of the organisation was expanded to include collective bargaining. TEK is a member of the Confederation of Unions for Academic Professionals in Finland, Akava, and the Delegation of Professional and Managerial Employees, YTN.

Organisation

Every third year the TEK members elect 70 representatives to the Council. The Council elects 10 members to the Board for a three year period. The headquarters in Helsinki employs about 50 persons. The staff of TEK reports to the Board. Ten committees assist the Board and the head office of the union.
